Trip to Devon and Cornwall

From September 23rd to September 30th, 2016 students from 6A and 6B and two teachers (Prof. Ryba and Prof. Gruber) spent a project week with a focus on environmental topics in Barnstaple, Devon.

Our trip started with two amazing day trips. On Saturday we went to see the Eden Project, where we split up into groups to explore the two giant biomes, one showing a rainforest, the other one a mediterranean environment. The next day we visited Tintagel, known as the legendary King Arthur's birthplace. After getting information about King Arthur and his knights in the Great Hall, we were fascinated by the breathtaking scenery with all the high cliffs. The wind and changeable weather (sunshine and rainy spells, with some lovely rainbows) made the climb a real adventure. Unfortunately we could not walk over to Merlin's cave because the tide was high. It was a great surprise for us that Naomi, who had left our school at the end of June and is now living in London, came to join us for the weekend trips.

For the rest of the week we attended a language school in the mornings, doing project-based work with our teachers Tim and Roy. At the end of the course we had to give presentations about various environmental topics based on the results of interviews we had to do with local people in Main Street.

On Monday afternoon we were taken on a tour of Barnstaple by our guide,Tom. Wearing Victorian-style clothes and performing the role of a town crier, he gave us insights into the town's interesting history. He did a great job despite the rain and strong wind.

We all enjoyed the afternoon trips to Braunton Burrows with its impressive sand dunes, which proved ideal for various challenging tasks the ranger set us and to Tapeley Park, the home of Hector Christie, an environmental activist, where our guide Helen informed us about permaculture gardening. In between we spent time on the beach experiencing the changing of the tides, sometimes getting quite wet in the process.

Staying with our host families, who really made us feel welcome, we got a taste of English hospitality and lifestyle.

We definitely enjoyed this week in the UK!
